Introduction

I recently led a public workshop organised by Leanoft GmbH. The event was held in Zurich and it introduced the basics of Lean and the Toyota Production System to company owners from diverse industries with no prior Lean experience.

Principles of Lean Management

In true Lean, the focus is on the customers and value creation by minimising waste and optimising processes through Kaizen. During the workshop, we highlighted what it means to focus on the customer and key principles such as value driven business processes, continuous improvement (Kaizen), respect for people, waste identification and so on. These principles serve as the foundation for achieving efficiency and enhancing productivity in any organisation.

Applying Lean Across Industries

One of the most significant aspects of the workshop was its demonstration of how lean management principles can be tailored to diverse industries. Participants from healthcare, fashion, and commodity trading sectors, with various business sizes ranging from startups to well-established companies with over 30 employees, shared where they would implement these strategies within their specific contexts. Through real-life examples, the workshop illustrated the versatility and adaptability of lean management practices.

Addressing Specific Business Challenges

During the workshop we explored different business settings, providing personalised answers to specific business challenges using real-life examples and practical solutions. This introductory session offered an insightful and invaluable opportunity for these businesses to learn about Kaizen, problem solving methods, and identifying waste in their operations to overcome challenges and stay ahead of the curve.
